Reading that noise is the best way to let Bears know you are there seemed smart, what better way than to ring a bell. In Denali (Alaska) and the Rockies (Colo) experienced hikers have noticed that the bells have had the reverse effect. These are very nice bells! But..do not buy them to prevent interactions with bears as some hikers think that the bears might be attracted to the sound. Read up on the area where you will be hiking to see if bells have a positive impact. Singing and talking loudly might be better. Good luck! Be safe!

i like the bell--haven't used it to deter bears---but it's mostly for walking my dogs in coyote and cougar country---i normally don't have tags on our dogs when we walk, since i dislike the jingling noise--so i figured i should carry a bell ---this bell is soothing to listen to, and it has a magnet so if you want the noise to stop, it can be controlled.
